About the Book
Birth Your Story: Why Writing About Your Birth Matters is about using writing as a powerful way to remember, process, heal, and honor one’s experience of birth. Meant to inspire, empower, and offer guidance; the book takes mothers and fathers through the why and how of birth story writing and includes more than a dozen inspiring stories from men and women with diverse birth backgrounds, including loss, adoption, hom ebirth, cesarean birth, surrogacy and more.
The book begins by describing why writing about your birth is so important and how it is a unique tool you can use to remember, process, claim, heal and honor your experience of birth-- no matter how it looked, how long ago, or whether or not you are a writer.
Then we explore the anatomy of a birth story, looking at their narrative structure, the three layers of a birth story, and how these stories change over time.
Next, we journey through the creative process of writing start to finish, including:
- setting an intention and making a plan,
- breaking through writing blocks,
- meeting success in your writing, and
- what to do with your story once you’ve written it.
The book draws on the wisdom of meditation, expressive movement arts, Non-Violent Communication, therapeutic writing, and persuasive writing to offer a writing guide like no other.
Throughout the book, you are invited to embrace the fullness and depth of your birth experience, recognizing that birth is more than a set of chronological facts, but a profound transformation that affects us deeply on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. This book will honor the entirety of your experience and invite you to explore it all, not just what is acceptable to share in your average social setting.
Because your stories matter.
Because YOU matter.
This book is for all people who have experienced the power and transformation of birth. Birth Your Story is for expectant parents and those who birthed years or decades ago. It is for the seasoned writer, as well as the one who would never call herself a writer. It is for women and men, same sex couples, single parents, teen parents, adopters, partners, all who have a birth story to tell.
This book will help you feel included and welcomed in a realm that tends to value some experiences over others. If you’ve had an abortion or are struggling with miscarriage or birth trauma, you are welcome here. If you had a natural birth at home, or if you scheduled a cesarean birth, you are welcome here. If you are in a same sex relationship, are not in a relationship at all, or are married, you are welcome here.
